How to Make Helium Balloons Last Longer

Helium balloons are popular decorations for birthdays and all different types of parties. The only problem is that they do not seem to last as long as we would like. However, there are a number of ways to help make your helium balloons last longer.

  1. First: Tips to remember when having your balloons filled

You need to remember that a helium balloon does not keep its shape as long as an air filled balloon. The first recommendation is to wait until the event is about to start before filling your balloons; keep them in bags until they are ready. This can help you minimize the loss of helium particles. When you are having them filled ask to have high float added; this helps the balloons float longer by coating the inside of the balloon so that helium is not lost. For the longest lasting materials, foil or mylar is the recommended choice; they tend to lose their helium much more slowly than latex or rubber balloons.

  2. Second: Storage before the beginning of the event is important

The final and most important suggestion is to make sure you keep them in a temperature controlled area. A lot of people make the mistake of leaving them in their car until they are ready to use them. You do not want to expose them for to extreme cold or heat for extended periods of time. Cold weather makes the balloons shrink; conversely, when balloons are subjected to hot weather, the helium expands and can cause the balloon to pop.
